I'm a big fan of seeing the other side of a story. Growing up, Donna Jo Napoli's ZEL and Gregory Maguire's WICKED and CONFESSIONS OF AN UGLY STEPSISTER were my first brushes with seeing the other side of a fairy tale. Since then, reading such stories through new eyes is always a fun experience for me.

Last night, I stumbled upon CINDERELLA IS EVIL by Jamie Campbell on Amazon while trying to look up lost info about a translation deal Amazon had for another Cinderella retelling that was a trilogy. (I read about it last year on, I think, Publisher's Weekly. Any ideas? I think it was originally published in Finland or Poland...) Anyway, I was glad for the stumble! I'm a big fan of discovering new fairy tales...especially when they're free. I was glad to see that the book was also available for nook. I quickly downloaded and read it.

Don't expect a long book. This is novella-length, and under sixty pages. Due to the short length, parts of the story are rather rushed, especially the ending. While I wish there had been more character depth and build-up at the end, I still really appreciated what Campbell did. While Ugly Stepsister Anna was a bit of a Debbie Downer, it was easy to see how selfish Cinderella could be. She often took things the wrong way, and never wanted to be a part of the family, before or after her father passed. Cinderella's stepmother doesn't like looking at her because she's the spitting image of her deceased husband, whom she loved. But she never sentenced Cinderella to work. Cinderella took that mantle up on her own. When the tailor sends over an unfinished dress for the ball, Cinderella doesn't even listen to the explanation, but freaks out. And the prince? He isn't as charming as you might think. Anna doesn't want to see her stepsister trapped with him, but what can she do? Cinderella is determined that no one wants the best for her!

CINDERELLA IS EVIL is the first book in The Fairy Tales Retold Series. The second book, SAVING RAPUNZEL, is only 99¢, and the third book, KILLING SNOW WHITE, is $1.99. All three books are available for nook, Kindle, Kobo, and more!

Title: CINDERELLA IS EVIL
Author: Jamie Campbell
Release Date: March 27, 2013
Publisher: Jamie Campbell
SUMMARY:

History is told from one person’s perspective. Sometimes they don’t get it right.

Ugly Stepsister Anna has wrongly been accused of being mean and evil. Now it is time she got the opportunity to tell her side of the story.

With Cinderella so perfect and wonderful, it is no wonder Anna feels ugly in comparison. Dealing with bullies, a grumpy mother and the death of her step-father, Anna is at her wits end.

When the Prince’s ball approaches, Anna is told she must find a husband to save the family fortune. Attending with her sisters, the sulky Prince Charming only has eyes for Cinderella.

With the burden of being the only one to unite her step-sister with the Prince, will Anna act as cupid? Or will she protect Cinderella from the arrogant Charming?

A charming twist to the story of Cinderella, told completely from the point of view of the Ugly Step-Sister.
