{The Scribbler} Do you get annoyed when novels are "Loosely Inspired By," not more "Direct" retellings? Do you prefer it?

I decided to retire Word Count Wednesdays because I don't often bother to post it.
I still like talking about writing, though, and decided to merge WCW into The Scribbler,
which can be for any writing topics I wish to talk about.

It has been a long, long, long time since I had a feature for The Scribbler! Most of you probably don't even recall it! Hopefully I'll start using it more frequently, especially since I'm going on my first-ever writer's retreat soon!

I'm getting ready to delve into a new project, and I thought it might be fun to twist some fairy tale aspects into it. The only problem? I'm not doing a fairy tale retelling. But elements of the story work REALLY WELL with what I'm trying to do and wind up giving reason to the story.

So my struggle becomes...do I turn it into a twisted retelling, or continue on the route I'm traveling, where I'm only using a few elements of the story and it's not really a retelling at all?

For example....say you were reading a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood where she has a black cape and she has no grandparent to go see. Or maybe The Wild Swans, where we only have four brothers to make tunics for instead of eleven. Or The Little Mermaid, where she's a selkie instead of a mermaid. (None of these are the story I'm going with, but you get the gist!) Stories that are warped and lose some CORE elements--sometimes elements in the tale's title--but other parts are ripped out and used.

Would you hate something like that, or would you find it to be interesting?

Help a writer out! ^.~
